Global research and education networks gather in Brighton for TNC
We're hosting national research and education networks from over 70 countries at the GÉANT TNC conference.
The GÉANT (Gigabit European Academic Network) TNC conference brings together the specialised internet service providers for research and education across Europe and the wider world. As the UK’s national research and education network (NREN), we're hosting TNC 2025 in Brighton from 9 to 12 June.
Leaders and technical networking specialists from across the world attend TNC each year to share expertise and innovations in networking, security, trust and identity. The resulting connections boost European and global security for the backbone networks connecting research and education institutions both nationally and internationally.
Previous TNC conferences have launched twinning arrangements between NRENs that further deepen those connections. In May a team from Jisc visited their counterparts at the Kenyan NREN, KENET, to test new technology bringing wifi connectivity to remote areas. Using 4G and satellite connections our team were able to connect to the eduroam wifi network that serves universities and colleges in the UK.

As the NREN for the UK, we provide resilient, high-speed internet connectivity to 18 million users at over 900 organisations across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland over the JANET network. JANET caries over six petabytes of data every day and includes built-in cyber security services crucial for the protection of research data.
Heidi Fraser-Krauss, Chief Executive of Jisc, said:
“Jisc's place in the GÉANT community brings benefits to all of our UK members. TNC brings that community together to share innovative solutions to complex issues. I’m immensely proud of Jisc’s position as the busiest NREN in Europe as well as the myriad of digital, data, security, cloud and identity services that we provide the UK education and research sector. I look forward to sharing that pride with our NREN colleagues from around the world this week.”
