About

Institutions generate, consume and keep enormous amounts of digital information (“data”). To be useful, to allow its value to be realised, this data needs to be organised, managed and protected. As part of that protection (and in order to ensure the long-term sustainability and access to data) institutions can make use of digital preservation systems alongside their back-up and cyber security systems to keep the data both safe and usable.

Back-up and cyber security systems are relatively well accepted and are widely deployed. Digital preservation, on the other hand, less so. It’s a relatively complex process requiring significant storage and processing power and specialised knowledge. This leads to a classic chicken and egg situation. To make the case for and to deploy a digital preservation system requires a knowledgeable digital preservation specialist, but such a specialist is unlikely to be in place before a system has been acquired. And that’s where we come in.

Jisc provides advice, guidance and consultancy to our members (and beyond) to help organisations at any level of maturity to make progress in the digital preservation arena.
