IP address assignment

If you are applying for a Janet Network connection, we can assign an IP address space to your organisation from those allocated to Jisc for use over the Janet Network.

Approaches to IP addressing

There are a number of approaches to IP addressing:

  • Providing IPv6 address space
Janet's network backbone is fully enabled for IPv6. If you have a Janet connection, the IPv6 address space is available to you free of charge
  • Private IP4 address space and network address translation (NAT)
If you are using IPv4 address space, NAT makes the best use of small blocks of addresses allocated from the globally unique IP address space, and assists in conserving this limited resource
  • IP subnet addressing
Makes better use of IP address space; allows IP addresses to be divided into multiple smaller networks or subnets. Effective use of subnets may remove the need to obtain additional address space

Benefits and features

These include:

  • Appropriate address space and assignment advice
  • Scalability as your needs change (subject to agreement and notice)
  • Jisc being an RIPE NCC member, which ensures IP addresses comply with their assignment policies
  • IPv4 address space, a globally limited resource. Jisc assigns and recovers RIPE issued address space on behalf of our members
  • IPv6 address space assigned from within the Janet 2001:0630::/32 prefix

Requesting initial connection or additional IP address space

Requesting an initial connection to the Janet Network

If you are in the process of connecting to the Janet Network, our connections team will gather your requirements and have your initial address space allocation assigned to that connection

For more information about these connections and charges that may apply, please contact your relationship manager.

Requesting additional IP address space

Jisc's local internet registry team administrators recover all IP address requests, assessing member requirements against the appropriate policies before assigning any address space.

If you need further IP address space to facilitate additional network services, or an additional business and community engagement connection, send an initial email to ipaddress@ja.net. Following this, you will receive log in details for the web-based IP request portal.
