About

Institutions generate, consume and keep enormous amounts of digital information (“data”). In order to ensure the long-term sustainability and access to such data, institutions make use of digital preservation (DP) systems to keep the data both safe and usable. Digital preservation is a relatively complex process requiring significant storage and processing power. As a result, systems can be costly and take a significant resource to procure.

Dynamic purchasing systems (DPS) are a relatively new procurement vehicle being offered by Jisc to allow members (and affiliated organisations) to procure a digital preservation system through a fast, OJEU compliant, and low procurement cost route.

This session is an opportunity for us to introduce you to the concept of dynamic purchasing systems in general, the digital preservation DPS in particular, the vendors currently on the system and how you can go about using the digital preservation DPS to procure a solution for your institution.

Agenda

  • Introduction
  • Digital preservation: What it is, what it isn't and why it takes time and resources to procure?
  • What is a DP DPS
  • How to use a DPS - who is eligible and how to use it
  • Who are the vendors and what do they offer
  • Questions

Speakers

  • Paul Stokes - subject matter expert (digital preservation)
  • Keith Jenkins - senior relationship manager
  • Clare Nurton - procurement advisor

The need for digital preservation is a widespread amongst institutions that utilise digital information. However, adoption is not yet commonplace. This is partially because understanding of what actually makes up a digital preservation solution is lacking and partially because they are perceived to be expensive, and difficult to procure.

This session is an opportunity for us to dispel some of the mystique surrounding digital preservation, in particular the procurement of digital preservation solutions. We will introduce you to the concept of dynamic purchasing systems in general, the digital preservation DPS in particular, the vendors currently on the system and how you can go about using the digital preservation DPS to procure a solution for your institution.
