Macro and micro transformations - making digital happen

Join us at Heriot-Watt University for the fourth event in the 2023/24 demonstrating digital transformation series.

  • One day
  • Edinburgh
  • Free

This event will be held on

  • 21 May 2024

    • Heriot-Watt University Edinburgh Campus Edinburgh Scotland EH14 4AS
    • 09:30 – 16:00

About

At this event, colleagues from Heriot-Watt University will set out their approach to digital transformation using both macro and micro transformations. They will cover the successes and challenges of this approach and demonstrate value generated to the university through time and cost savings, along with other measures. Heriot-Watt University defines macro digital transformations as those major strategic digital change projects supported and enabled by enterprise systems. Micro transformation is where they take individual business processes and assess, optimise, digitise, upskill and then automate where possible.

Delegates will also have the opportunity of an optional tour of The National Robotarium is the UK's largest centre for Robotics and Artificial Intelligence.

This event will discuss the following area of Jisc’s framework and maturity model for digital transformation:

  • Organisational digital culture
  • Digital and physical infrastructure
  • Knowledge exchange and partnerships

Welcome and introduction by Jisc

Macro and micro digital transformation

Heriot-Watt University will showcase their approach to digital transformation, illustrating how they have tackled it at both large and small scales. They will also demonstrate how techniques typically applied at a smaller scale can be effectively applied to larger strategic initiatives.

  • Lucy Everest, Global chief operating officer.
  • Fraser Muir, Global director of IS
  • Tricia Moscati, Head of digital transformation
  • Mark Fowler, Head of applications and data

Breakout session one

Breakouts will be repeated twice. Delegates to select one of three options.

Breakout option one:

Sharing ideas and techniques for micro-transformation across HE, and creating a community of practice

Instead of spending months choosing the right team structure for the right automation tool, or weeks lost in technical YouTube rabbit holes, or even days unravelling licensing intricacies, let's establish a Further and Higher Education Automation (FE/HE) Community of Practice. Somewhere our institutions can share use cases, approaches to people, process, and technology, and much more.

  • Tricia Moscati, Head of digital transformation.

Breakout option two:

Gaining institutional buy in for digital transformational activities

Strategies to ensure engagement at senior executive level in taking forward digital transformation.

  • Fraser Muir, Global director of information services.

Breakout option three:

Applying concepts of micro-transformation to macro/major digital transformation projects

How continuous improvement models can be applied in large scale macro digital transformation projects to drive greater level of agility.

Can we break down major initiatives into smaller impactful deliverables to drive agility, innovation, and success? Can Agile methodologies and a Continuous Improvement approach be applied to macro transformation? What are the benefits, and what are the limits?

  • Mark Fowler, Head of applications and data.
