Safe Share enables authorised researchers to access and share data safely and securely, from your own project site – while still meeting strict information governance rules, which may vary according to the sensitivity of the data.
The service saves money and time on travel while enabling distributed approaches to innovative research.
Sometimes it’s the most sensitive data that offers the most promising research opportunities. From genome data and health records to social data and administrative records, sensitive data can hold the key to globally important discoveries.
The challenge for organisations, of course, is how to access and share such data securely and efficiently, while protecting the confidentiality of data subjects.
Currently, researchers need to travel to secure data stores, or arrange for data to be brought together from multiple secure centres. Either way, this can drain resources and slow the pace of research.
Safe Share will allow the secure exchange of data between your sites via an encrypted overlay over existing networking infrastructure, for example, over the Janet Network, the internet or PSN. Providing secure remote access to data that authorised users would otherwise have to travel in person to a secure centre to access.
Hours of service
The overlay service has the same availability as the underlying bearer network. It is your responsibility to determine the suitability of the bearer network.
Where the bearer network is the Janet Network the service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, all year.
The associated administration and support service is available during the business day. The business day is defined as Monday to Friday. It excludes 24-31 December and all English public holidays.
The target availability of the overlay is dependent on the bearer network.
Service-affecting maintenance is capped at 0.5% and is normally carried out with at least two weeks' notice.
The target time to restore the Safe Share service due to a fault is five business days.
The core of the Safe Share network
Has dual paths built-in
Uses equipment with dual power supplies

Resilience of the bearer network is the responsibility of the provider of that bearer network.
Resilience at your organisation is your responsibility.
