We monitor many frequencies - digital readiness in the near future
Speaker: Martin Hamilton, futurist, Jisc.
What and how will future generations learn for careers of the future like drone engineers, DNA editors and asteroid miners?
In this talk, Martin will set the scene for the day by discussing some future trends and their impact on digital readiness.

Choice of breakout sessions
Choose one of the following three sessions:
Curriculum confidence: resources for digital teaching and learning
Speaker: Lawrie Phipps, senior co-design manager, Jisc.
This workshop will build confidence to design and deliver a digital curriculum – one that will prepare students to learn successfully in digital settings, and to thrive in a digital world.
Three activities will be introduced and attendees will be encouraged to share ideas about completing them. Participants will then be able to take away the associated resources and complete, reflect on and follow up the activities in their own time.
Techniques for digital creation, problem solving and innovation
Speaker: Andy McGregor, deputy chief innovation officer, Jisc.
As part of Jisc's R&D work, we use a wide range of techniques to help us understand problems and opportunities, imagine solutions and then create them. We have collected these techniques into a playbook that anyone can use to answer questions and create new ideas.
This workshop will introduce the playbook by presenting delegates with a digital skills problem and challenging them to use the playbook to plan how they would solve the problem. Every delegate will receive a copy of the playbook to take away and use in their own institution.
This session is also taking place at 13:45.
Developing digital capability in a distributed institution
Speaker: John MacMillan, educational development leader, University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI).

Choice of breakout sessions
Choose one of the following three sessions:
Lowering the bar to using data – interactive dashboards for education
Speakers:
- Sarah Dunne, senior co-design manager, Jisc
- Jenni Awang, information analyst, University of St Andrews
As a society we are drowning in data. We’re walking bar codes – the data we leave behind us as we interact with digital systems and services is being used for all manner of purposes. Data is everywhere, yet how can we use it to inform the decisions we make in our daily working lives?
This interactive session will introduce delegates to the rational, creation, delivery and use of innovative interactive data dashboards and visualisations for the education sector. We will demonstrate dashboards, you will be guided to use some yourself and we’ll explain how you or your colleagues can benefit once back at the office.
Making sure your environment supports your students’ digital capability
Speaker: Chris Thomson, subject specialist (online learning and the digital student experience), Jisc.
This interactive workshop will discuss how we can ensure our digital environment offers our students’ opportunities to develop their digital capabilities.
We will share the outcomes from our recently completed Jisc student digital experience tracker surveys of over 22,000 students from higher education, further education and skills as well as online learners. These findings will highlight key areas we need to be addressing to ensure our students’ digital capabilities are supported.
Participants will also explore resources and tools they can use in their own organisation to support their practice.
Digital literacy - what does it mean for your capabilities?
Speaker: Steve Rowlett, e-learning development team leader, UCL.
-
